Ancelotti Accepts Full Responsibility For Milan’s UEFA Cup Disaster
The Rossoneri were stunned last night after Werder Bremen came back from the dead to knock them out of Europe.
Milan were eliminated from the UEFA Cup by Werder Bremen last night, despite leading by a comfortable looking 2-0 scoreline at one stage of the match.
The Rossoneri went two up within the first 35 minutes, thanks to goals by Andrea Pirlo and Alexandre Pato, only for them to once again surrender a healthy advantage in the latter stages. Claudio Pizarro grabbed a double in the final 25 minutes of the match, to ensure the Germans progressed in the competition via the away-goal rule after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate.
The San Siro crowd could not believe what they had witnessed, as their team who had been tagged as the favourites to win the competition, were bundled out of Europe by a club currently struggling in the German Bundesliga.
At the completion of the contest, Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti expressed his disappointment with the result, whilst he also accepted the blame for his side’s elimination from the competition.
“Werder Bremen deserved to qualify, despite the fact that we led for most of the tie,” Ancelotti declared in an interview with Sky Sports.
“They played better from the first minute of last week’s match, and they never allowed us to get into the game.
“I, as the coach, am the most responsible for the result, so I cannot hide.
“We need to examine the errors we made tonight, and try to improve quickly.
“I'm not disappointed with my players, as they gave their all. It’s just disappointing to go out of the competition,” he added.
Ancelotti went on to discuss the problems at Milan, both on and off the field in not only this match, but over the course of the season.
“I would say that the injuries to three key players in Kaka, [Alessandro] Nesta and [Clarence] Seedorf, clearly have had an affect on our form this season.
“Injuries have hampered our entire campaign to date.
“In this match however, we struggled in the air, and that is something we knew we would get in trouble with, as we lack centimetres.
“The problem is not that though.
“The entire midfield has suffered from our opponents' superior pace tonight, thus why we let our advantage slip in the end,” he concluded.
Milan will be hoping to return to the winner’s list this weekend, when they do battle with Sampdoria in the Serie A.
