Roma were hoping to make amends for their dismal showing against Catania in their last game of 2008 but Luciano Spalletti’s side had to content themselves with a single point after a stirring 2-2 draw with Milan.

“We needed a good result at home to make up ground on the top four, and we managed to get a draw in the end,” Philippe Mexes told Controcampo.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men went 2-1 ahead just eight minutes after the restart, as Brazilian starlet Alexandre Pato outpaced Mexes before coolly chipping goalkeeper Doni.

“Pato is incredible, he is very strong and it is hard to stop him. He did very well because such a finish was not easy after a 20-metre run.”

Milan have been heavily linked with Mexes in recent weeks and the French press claimed last week that they could launch a bid to bring him to the Stadio San Siro next summer.
