Italy Watch: Keeping Tabs On England's Champions League Opposition

Every Monday from now until the resumption of the Champions League, Goal.com will take a look at how the Italian teams are progressing ahead of their big last 16 ties against the English...

The countdown has started! Just over a month to go before the Italian and English sides square off in the Champions League.

Roma will take on Arsenal, Inter will face reigning European champions Manchester United and Juventus will clash with Chelsea. Which sides will prevail and go through? Will one nation overpower the other? We will lead you to the event by monitoring the health status of the contenders after every official game.

Here we go…

What Happened?

Udinese-Juventus 2-1 (Quagliarella, Di Natale, Iaquinta): After a seemingly endless run of bad results, the Friulans got back on track condemning second-placed Juve to a high-profile defeat. After taking the lead through Fabio Quagliarella, a superb effort from Antonio Di Natale wrapped the game up. Vincenzo Iaquinta netted a consolation goal from the penalty spot. Juve are now six points adrift of Inter.

Catania-Inter 0-2 (Stankovic, Ibrahimovic): José Mourinho sat out a touchline ban, but Inter were impressive and soon set the record straight at the Massimino with a goal from Serb midfielder Dejan Stankovic. The Etnei had a goal disallowed, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic put the game to bed in the second period.

Roma-Palermo 2-1 (Totti, Cavani, Brighi): Roma keep marching on and welcomed back captain Francesco Totti, who netted a goal and was one of the protagonists of the win over the Rosanero.

Top & Flop

Inter: 'Ibra' was firing on all cylinders and took his tally for the season to 13 goals with his deadly mixture of class and power. Good performances from Dejan Stankovic and Julio Cruz.

Juventus: Sebastian Giovinco flopped badly. Without captain Alessandro Del Piero, coach Claudio Ranieri counted on him, but he showed all his physical and behavioural shortcomings.

Roma: Nice showing from John Arne Riise, while Daniele De Rossi, Alberto Aquilani and Matteo Brighi were once again majestic and managed to muzzle Palermo when it counted. Solid performance at the back.

Treatment Table

Inter: Walter Samuel is still on the sidelines, but it’s nothing serious. Inter are waiting on news from Patrick Vieira, who returned to Milan after undergoing therapies in France. Adriano will sit out two more games due to a ban.

Juventus: David Trezeguet is back in the frame and Ranieri will now have an extra weapon for the tie with Chelsea. Jorge Andrade, Jonathan Zebina, Dario Knezevic, Mauro Camoranesi, Hasan Salihamidzic, Alex Manninger and Tiago are still sidelined. Del Piero skipped the trip to Udine, but should be available for the match against Cagliari.

Roma: Good news from Totti: the captain has recovered from injury and proved he is already match-fit. Christian Panucci was left out of the squad and is likely to depart the club. Marco Cassetti could be sidelined for up to three months after suffering a muscular problem.

Press Room Soundbites

Inter: Ibrahimovic, “This goal means so much to me, as I was suspended for our previous game. The coach was not sitting on the bench today, but we are nonetheless strong even when he is in the stands. Juve and Milan? You can’t always be in scintillating form, you can have bad days from time to time.”

Juventus: Ranieri, “Del Piero? He is important for us, not just because of his goals, but he is also a reference point and we felt his absence tonight.”

Roma: Luciano Spalletti, “I would not say that the sides in front of us are feeling the heat because of us. Roma are doing well and won an important game against a strong team, because Palermo put in a great performance.”
